McNeese State University's cross-country team has been a force to be reckoned with in the Southland Conference for some time. This year has been a very good one for the Cowboys and Cowgirls so far. Their season-opener was a blast with both the Cowboys and Cowgirls placing second behind the host Lamar University at the Lamar Invitational on Friday, Sept. 3. The Cowboys scored 35 points, and the Cowgirls scored 56 points.
McNeese's next meet was at the University of Louisiana Lafayette Intercollegiate Cross Country Meet on Saturday, Sept. 18, with the Cowboys' placing second behind the host, while the Cowgirls finished fourth. The Cowboys scored 53 points, and the Cowgirls scored 72 points behind Northwestern State University, Grambling State University and ULL.
McNeese's most recent meet was on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Louisiana State University Invitational. The Cowboys scored 110 points to finish fifth behind LSU, ULL, Southeastern Louisiana University and Tulane University, while the Cowgirls scored 216 points to place eighth behind LSU, Tulane, University of New Orleans, ULL, SELU, Nicholls State University and Loyola University New Orleans.
Individually, the cross-country runners have not done badly either. Alan Foolkes was named Southland Conference Runner of the Week after winning the Lamar Invitational on Sept. 3. Ruth Waller has been named Southland Conference Runner of the Week twice already this year after placing first at the ULL Intercollegiate Cross Country Meet and again after placing fourth in the LSU Invitational. Both Foolkes and Waller have a first and a second place finish in their outings this year and lead their respective teams into meets.
Other Cowboys worthy of mention are Robert Goodwin, who placed second at Lamar and 10th at ULL; Phil Winfield, who placed eighth at Lamar; Barry Hill, who placed 16th at ULL; and Nicholas Kay, who finished 18th at ULL. Cowgirls of note include Barbara Caraway, who finished second on the team at LSU, ULL and third at Lamar, and Sonia Clark, who came in second at Lamar.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls face their next match up in Natchitoches on Monday, Oct. 4 at the Northwestern State University Invitational. Their other meets for the rest of the semester are the Lamar Invitational on Monday, Oct. 18, the Northwestern State University Tri-Meet on Friday, Oct. 22, the Southland Conference Championship in Beaumont, Texas, on Monday, Nov. 1 and possibly the NCAA Regionals in Waco, Texas, on Saturday, Nov. 13 and the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 22.
