FFA members stay active in community

The McNeese Chapter of Future Farmers of America recently participated in the annual Lake Area Beach Sweep sponsored by Southwest Louisiana Team Green and held on Sept. 18. The nine FFA members pitched in by volunteering their time to clean up the Contraband Bayou around the McNeese campus. The members were instructed to keep a record of all items collected, including the most interesting item found. McNeese FFA won a Most Interesting Items Award by finding a birth certificate and social security card from New York. Members in attendance were John Compton, Jennifer Compton, Heidi Landry, Dane O'Blanc, Thomas Hall, Mandie Bourque, Kalem Dartez, Jerred Hebert, Dustin Farmer and faculty advisor Dr. Chip LeMieux.

McNeese FFA members also participated in the second annual Louisiana Agricultural Education Collegiate Conference, which was held on Sept. 25 in Lafayette, La. Experienced agricultural teachers spoke to members stressing the importance of agriculture in today's world. Various speakers and officials of FFA and the state gave presentations, including Sen. Nick Gautreaux and State FFA President Tyler Landry. The members also participated in a Quiz Bowl, in which students answered questions about FFA history, FFA knowledge and other agricultural related issues. Josh LaVergne, Ashley Passman, Jessica Lester, Kevin Moreau, Jarred Haynie, Heidi Landry, Jennifer Compton, Dane O'Blanc, Amanda Shahan, Thomas Hall, Dustin Farmer, Richard Thompson, Steven Coco, Leila Henry, Ty Istre and Kalem Dartez were the members in attendance. Dr. Harold Aymond and Dwight Bertrand were the faculty advisors in attendance.
