In a student's college career, at times cramming all night before a final or a due-date is simply part of the job description. Other times, students cram because of procrastination.
In the event of this happening, where can a student go for 24 hour access to internet and resources, or just a quiet place to study? The library would have seemed like the most obvious answer, but unfortunately it doesn't stay open 24 hours a day.
The Contraband spoke to the Frazar Memorial Library Director, Nancy Khoury, to better understand the situation. Khoury brought out the following when asked about library hours and their possible causes for having a weak staff.
"We barely have enough staff to keep the library open during the current schedule. The staffing problem is not new nor does it have any relation to Hurricane Rita." In fact, the library, to the best of her knowledge, has never been open 24/7.
The library's current staff is limited, and extending its hours for finals will also be a cause for concern and additional strain. It is understandable then that opening 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is impractical and quite frankly impossible at this point.
The fact of the matter is, there is nowhere on campus for students to go and study quietly with adequate resources. This presents a problem for many students who need those few extra hours for study time.
Computers are finding there way into many homes, but sometimes conditions at home are worse for studying than other places, especially if you share dorms with fellow students. The need for a facility that offers this to students is real with no actual solution is sight.
Creating such an environment would only add to the academic experience provided at McNeese and be a testament to the "Excellence with a Personal Touch" motto the university holds so dear.
There is good news, however, regarding the Frazar Memorial Library. Plans are in the making to completely renovate the library. Richard Rhoden, the director of the Facilities and Plant Operations for McNeese, says that he is "optimistic [the plans] will be completed by June 2007."
The additions and renovations could start as early as the fall 2007 semester. The renovations are to include improved heating and cooling, as well as better humidity
control, complete renovation of the interior of the facility like new ceilings and energy efficient lighting, flooring, elevator upgrades, new roofing on the original building. The move for renovation will likely be accepted with open-arms, as the building has been commented on as being dilapidated and out-of-date by some students.
Hopefully the university can find a way to address the need for a better study environment that offers longer hours. Until then, try to stay ahead of the curve to prevent those late-night cram sessions.
