The events that took place on the campus of Virginia Tech have left a lot of our community asking questions about McNeese's emergency procedures. Director of Public Information and Communications, Candace Townsend had this to say: An established Crisis Response Team, chaired by the President, meets regularly to discuss safety and security issues, emergency planning and response and to update procedures.
The Crisis Response Team members have completed federal emergency and homeland security training programs.
All University police officers are trained and commissioned police officers. The University Police Chief is also a graduate of the F.B.I. Academy.
Members of the Crisis Response Team, and vital campus resource persons, have been issued BlackBerrys, cell phones, and portable Internet connection cards to facilitate rapid communication with the campus and other agencies as needed. Several satellite phones have been assigned to crisis response team members and are placed strategically across campus.
Building Coordinators are assigned in all academic and non-academic buildings are responsible for assisting University Police in building evacuations or shelter in place situations.
A blast email system is in place to rapidly notify all employees and students of campus safety, security or emergency situations. All faculty and students and all employees working in academic or non academic offices are issued a McNeese email account and informed that this is the primary method used to post campus announcements.
The university Web site is configured to shut down non-essential hits and requests and post emergency information and updates on the main page.
University police cars are equipped with public address systems.
The university telephone system is equipped to deliver announcements and emergency information to incoming callers and can be programmed to host a special line for incoming information calls.
14 emergency call boxes are strategically placed throughout the campus, married student housing area, and the athletic complex.
