Blues defeat the Golds by a 23-14 score in the McNeese Blue-Gold football game

Steven Whitehead and Quinten Lawrence, the team's MVPs from the past two seasons, put on a dazzling display here Thursday night as McNeese State concluded its spring football workouts with a Blue-Gold game.
Whitehead, the outstanding player in the Southland Conference a year ago, led the Blues to a 23-14 victory.
Lawrence led the Gold.
Whitehead rushed for 51 yards in the game for the Blue, scoring on a 29 yard run. He also caught a game high four passes for 52 yards.
Lawrence scored both Blue touchdowns, tallying on a 56 yard pass from quarterback Derrick Fourroux and on a 16 yard run. He scored both times he touched the football.
Other scoring for the Blues came on a seven yard run by Neely Hubbard, a four yard run by Toddrick Pendland and a 17 yard field goal by Blake Bercegeay.
The Blue had the better offensive show in the game, coming up with 271 total yards to the Gold's 163.
Jamie Leonard led the Gold in rushing with 55 yards on 10 carries. Hubbard had 38 yards on 10 rushes for the Blue.
Steven Whitehead led the Blue team.
Mark Fontenot completed seven of 14 passes for 65 yards and backup Bart Crader hit on six of nine for 78 yards for the Blue. Fourroux connected on four of nine for 67 yards for the Gold.
On the defensive side, Trey Bennett and Kerry Gremillion intercepted passes while all-American Bryan Smith had three tackles (one for a loss), caused a fumble and recovered a fumble. Also for the Blue, Bennett, Josh Quayhagen and Jamelle Juneau had three tackles each.
Defensively for the Gold, David Turnage, Vaalyn Jackson and Matt Kreamer had five tackles apiece and Brant Linde had a pass interception and a quarterback sack along with four tackles.
