The Cowgirls and pitcher Cori Bram got off to a rocky start here Sunday as Central Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After UCA's leadoff hitter grounded out to third, Bram walked Mindy Chancey, Brittany Bearden advanced on a error, then Bram walked Janae Owens to load the bases. Keatha Tollett's sacrifice fly to right field scored Chancey. Bram then struck out Sarah Garcia to end the inning in what could have been a big inning for Central Arkansas.
After settling down, Bram threw six shutout innings and gave up only three singles. Bram and the Cowgirls allowed only one baserunner to advance pass second base in the final six innings. Central Arkansas left Hannah Ambrose stranded on third in the fifth inning after Ambrose was hit by a pitch, a single by Catherine Jones and a pass ball.
McNeese tied the game in the second when Megan Beard singled and advanced to second on a Rachel King single. A RBI double by Tiffany Ritchie scored Beard to tie the game. A single by Brooke Brodhead scored King to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead. McNeese added a single run in the third on King's second hit of the game that scored Jenny Clay for a 3-1 Cowgirl lead.
McNeese added three more runs in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. After back-to-back walks by Brodhead and Morvant, Rachel Phillips' two RBI double scored Brodhead and Morvant. Phillips scored the final Cowgirl run on a RBI single by Beard.
McNeese pounded out 11 hits in the game with Liz Morvant, Beard and King collecting two apiece. Clay, Phillips and Ritchie had the only Cowgirl extra base hits with one double apiece. Bram struck out six and walked two as she improved to 5-11 on the year.
McNeese (22-26, 8-7 SLC) then traveled to Nacogdoches, TX. last Tuesday and Wednesday for a rare mid-week Southland Conference series. A 5 p.m. doubleheader was scheduled for Tuesday with the series concluding with a 2 p.m. single game on Wednesday.
