To break the monotony of boring sports stories week in and week out, I have decided to write a weekly column on a mixed bag of odds and ends sports stories from the week.
Spring practice is underway for the McNeese Cowboys. Practice began April 1 with a two hour workout in helmets, T-shirts and gear. Coach Matt Viator said that practice in full pads would begin Saturday, April 5. The annual Blue and Gold Scrimmage has been scheduled for April 27. One Cowboy glad to be back on the field was senior tailback, Steven Whitehead, who missed ten games last season due to injury. The Cowboys will open their season August 30 with an away game in Chapel Hill, N.C. versus the division I North Carolina Tar Heels.
LSU football star Ryan Perrilloux found himself in yet another sticky situation on March 28 in Baton Rouge's Kona Grill. When he was denied drinks by the bartender, Perrilloux began to curse and use racial slurs. He continued this behavior after he was confronted by the bar's manager. Although Perrilloux initially refused to leave until he was served, he vacated the premises after police were called.
Presidential candidate Barack Obama enjoyed a game of bowling on the evening of March 30. He was joined by fellow senator Robert Casey and supporter Roxanne Hart. After putting on a pair of white and blue, size thirteen-and-a-half rental shoes, Obama then turned to the crowd that had gathered to watch and warned them "the last time I bowled was 30 years ago, when I was 16." He then helped prove the age-old saying, if you don't use it, you lose it. Senator Obama went on to bowl a 37.
McNeese softball player Jenny Clay was named Co-Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week. Clay's .824 batting average for the week helped the Cowgirls go 5-1 on the week. This was the first award of national recognition for the Cowgirls and the second for the Southland Conference. Sarah Dawson, formerly of UL-Monroe, earned this honor in 1997.
The NCAA men's basketball tournament has seen a historic turn of events this season. All number-one seeds have made it to the Final Four, which is a first in tournament history. This year has been dubbed "the year of the upset," as eight lower seeds won first round games, four won second round games and, most notably, number-ten seed Davidson nearly upset number-one seed Kansas for a Final Four berth by a two-point margin. As a shocker to many dedicated fans, the second-ranked Duke Blue Devils fell to the seventh-ranked Mountaineers of West Virginia in the second round; this happened after they beat Belmont in the first round by one point in a nail-biter of a finish.
