To the dismay of educators all over campus, avenues for fun and debauchery are not restricted to the weekends alone. Although the pleasures of the weekday nightlife in Lake Charles offers little comparison to bigger party towns such as Lafayette and Baton Rouge, there are a few options in the Lake Area to brighten up those dull school nights. Here is what downtown had to offer on Tuesday, August 19.
Last semester on occasional Tuesday nights, a group of McNeese faculty took over Rikenjaks for their own devices. Now the group, Drink n Think, offers trivia competitions every other Tuesday night. Professors Alex Scorpan and Josh Finnell put on an entertaining four round show where competitors pay three dollars to test their knowledge on subjects ranging from local events to Russian utopian literature. The winning team receives two thirds of the collected fees. The Romanian Trivia Czar, Scorpan, verbally assaults players with witty humor injected into questions. Students of McNeese, here is your chance to show the faculty members that attend this event that you actually do possess the ability to think and express yourself intelligently.
After taking in what Rikenjaks had to offer, I walked over to Club Seven Ten on Ryan Street. Local favorite, pop metal band Colorcast Veteran was playing an acoustic set to a chilled out crowd. Bassist "Animal," for he goes by no other name, and guitarists Luke Cooper and Sean Kelly traded in their electric axes for the mellow acoustic guitar. Drummer Alex Lasher sat and played bongos rather than pounding his double bass pedal. Jordon Dougherty's vocal style also adhered very well to the placid setting.
As many readers already know, Colorcast is an extremely talented local band. They have risen from the status of no name to superstars of the Lake Charles bar scene. Instrumentally, they are one of the best groups in the city, and vocally, Dougherty is far from shabby. Colorcast Veteran's next show in Lake Charles will be Friday, August 29, 2008 at Seven Ten with bands Anavie and Sunrise Kills.
I hope I have not upset too many people by indicating that studying is not the only activity for college students to participate in during the week. Just remember, you cannot blame me when you get that lovely WN after missing too much class with a hangover. Always remember to be safe and drive home sober.
