Wow. For two teams I really didn't care too much about, I thought it was one of the most amazing Super Bowls I've ever seen. The Steelers broke records and the Cardinals broke hearts--notably, mine. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end of the game, as most people in America were.
The Steelers now hold the record for the most Super Bowl wins for any franchise in history. They now have six, breaking the tie with the Cowboys (thank God). And the thing is, all the big names will be back next year. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, wide-outs Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes, safety Troy Polamalu, linebacker James Harrison (the guy who ran the interception back for the touchdown at the end of the first half, and also the league defensive MVP of the year) and running back Willie Parker. None of these guys are planning on going anywhere. Even though I was rooting for the Cardinals, I have to say that next year, this Steelers team might be even better.
The Cardinals came so close. I have a love/hate relationship with games that take you on an emotional roller coaster ride like this one did. I felt like throwing up, and I wasn't even playing. There are a couple of things we need to remember about this Arizona team and need to give them credit for. First, this was their first ever Super Bowl as a franchise, and probably the first for just about everybody except Kurt Warner. The poise that they showed and the professionalism that they played with have to be admired. Second, most of these guys may be back next year as well. Even if they start out slowly next season, don't put them completely out of the race for another championship.
While I thought the teams played extremely well and provided an entertaining game, I thought the officiating crew didn't do much more than stall the game and blow a couple of important calls. I mean, more than they usually do. For instance, the roughing the passer call during the Steelers' third quarter drive was taking it a little too far. Go back and watch the replay if you don't know what I'm talking about. The final play of the game was also questionable. It's over now, but I'm sure it would've prevented a lot of bar fights if they had just had an official review of the play to determine whether Kurt Warner fumbled the ball or if it was actually an incomplete pass. Oh well. Maybe they can blow it again more thoroughly next year.
Overall, it was an excellent game. Most Super Bowls just make me glad the season is over. This one made me look forward to next year.
