"Last House on the Left" remake leaves fans screaming for more
Charles Sullivan
Issue date: 3/30/09 Section: Entertainment
Dir: Dennis Iliadis
Act: Garret Dillahunt, Monica Potter, Tony Goldwyn
R for sadistic brutal violence including a rape and disturbing images, language, nudity and some drug use
This remake of the legendary 1972 Grindhouse film certainly came as a pleasant surprise. Three psychopaths brutally attack two girls and take refuge in the home of one of the victim's parents, and revenge is exacted upon them. This is probably one of the most well-devised remakes that I have ever seen. It vastly improves on every aspect of the original film and takes old styles of horror and revenge into a modern day, well done film. Overall, the acting of the characters was very believable and impressive. Also, the shots were quite beautiful at times. Though the plot is extremely simple, it makes for a very enjoyable and rough horror film.
"The Last House on the Left" is not without problems though. Even though the film is enthralling, it became boring at one point and it is quite noticeable. The script is fine, but still is very plain. Also, many audience members will find themselves unable to handle this film due to its rather extreme content, including a rape scene. If you have a queasy stomach, this is certainly not the film for you, due to its sadistic depiction of violence. However, when it comes to the extremity of content, the original "The Last House on the Left" has this film beat easily. Also, many film aficionados will see this film as being way too much like another classic Grindhouse "I Spit on Your Grave" in its depiction of revenge as exacted by the parents, but that still does not lower the value of this film.
Needless to say, "The Last House on the Left" was an extremely impressive film. From cinematography to acting and even a very good score, this film is the perfect example of what a remake should be. It improved on the original, and created a new and wonderful horror film that will hopefully stand the test of time as the original has. My hat is off to this director and I hope his future projects are just as impressive as this one.
