Greetings to all readers of The Contraband, McNeese State University's leading source for everything you need and want to know while attending this university. The Contraband would like to extend a special welcome to all incoming freshmen. Last semester was my first time writing for The Contraband and my reason for writing was to let everyone in on great places to eat, chill and socialize in Lake Charles as well surrounding areas. This semester I plan to do the same. Lake Charles is beginning to grow in so many areas. The most important of all is restaurants and a lot of new restaurants are opening.

To start off this semester I visited a restaurant on the north end of town. In all honesty it was an unplanned visit, but a visit well worth it. My grandparents and I spotted Full Do's Café & Catering Co. as we turned off North Goos Boulevard onto Opelousas Street. The restaurant's marquee advertised their plate special for the day which was beef stew and/or shrimp creole. The stew is what caught my grandparents' eyes and persuaded them to pull over. Unfortunately we learned that they had sold out of both the stew and shrimp creole by about 2:00. So we ordered the baked pork roast. Three sides come with your main dish and the restaurant offered seven options to choose from. Out of the corn bread dressing, rice dressing, yams, green beans, potato salad, red beans, corn and mustard greens my grandfather chose the yams, cornbread dressing and green beans. My grandmother ordered yams, cornbread dressing and mustard greens. I wanted to sample everything so I enjoyed the best of both worlds by sharing with both of them. The pork roast was superb; perfectly seasoned and so juicy it almost fell apart. The yams were not as sweet as I normally like them, but were still very delicious almost like a desert. The cornbread dressing was great with a kick of seasoning, but just enough to remind you, that you are in SWLA. The mustard greens were a little bitter, but enjoyable. Each meal is served with a bread roll. Plate lunches cost $7.99 with a canned drink.
