With a bare chested Robert Downy Jr. bare knuckle fighting a brute, a heart throb Jude Law sword fighting thugs, and a sexy Rachael McAdams seducing the brilliant Holmes this film successfully secured it's own genre.
This Christmas when Sherlock Holmes hit theatres nation wide the only other contender in the box office was James Cameron's Avatar. Sherlock Holmes, whose story hasn't had a popular breakout film to date, hasshown audiences that an old dog could indeed learn a new trick.
Sherlock Holmes was written by the late Sir Arthur Conon Doyle, a London based author. Doyle produced 4 novels and 56 short stories of Holmes and partner Dr. John Watson. Dr. Watson narrates all of the stories, with the exception of 4. Holmes self narrates 2 of the stories and the last 2 are wrote in third person.
For those who thought this film would be a 2-hour episode of "Murder she wrote" would be pleasantly mistaken. Sherlock Holmes was jam packed with exciting fight scenes, overlapping plot lines, and merciless villains. Another pleasant aspect was the ending, which promised audiences a certain sequel.
The film was filled with small tidbits and inside jokes that are only found in the novels, which appeal to hardcore Holmes fans. Ritchie attracted casual fans of Holmes by glamorizing Sherlock Holmes passion of bare fist fighting. This gave a different image of Holmes previously viewed, a cooped up old man with a pipe solving mysteries.
Anyone familiar with the popular medical drama House has a grasp of Sherlock Holmes. House was based loosely on Sherlock Holmes; the similarity between the names of the characters proves this.
House is the equivalent to Holmes, and Watson is the mirror image of Wilson. In the Sherlock Holmes series Watson requires a cane, in house the sidekick walks just fine and the main character has a bum leg in need of cane.
Robert Downey Jr. and Hugh Laurie brought their characters to life with a sacrifice of social skills for an amazing mind capable of solving mind-boggling cases. With their trusty assistants being the voice of reason and responsibility.
Sherlock Holmes was an excellent film worth the movie ticket and with a sequel in the works fans will be hard pressed to be patient for the next chapter in this saga.
