After their first six games of the year the Cowgirls sat at 1-5, but have climbed back to win six of their last seven including the title of the Fourth Annual Memphis Blues City Classic Champions.
They kicked the tournament off by playing Indiana State, a game in which they scored early and often.
The Cowgirls took a 5-0 lead in the very first inning thanks to three hits and two errors by Indiana State. Sophomore Claire Terracina led the inning off by reaching on an error, she would go on to advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Langner, then third on a single from Molly Guidry.
Heather Mosser would eventually drive Terracina home on a fielder's choice RBI. Next to score was Guidry off of a throwing error, then was Mosser thanks to a single to center field from Liz Morvant. The last two Cowgirls to score in the inning were Morvant and Kourtney Kober off of a two run double by Jessica Wilson. Kober had reached on an error.
The Cowgirls would go on to score single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings which led to their 8-3 victory. Terracina was the only McNeese player to score twice.
The victory advanced the Lady Pokes to a game against Southeast Missouri State.
It was outfielder Liz Morvant who led the Cowgirls to victory in this one. She went three for three at the plate, scored one run, and had one stolen base. The three hits tied a tournament record.
While Morvant took care of things at the plate, it was freshman Megan Bond who got it done on the other end of the spectrum. The pitcher picked up her second win of the season after tying her career high 11 strikeouts.
After picking up a sizeable 6-0 lead in the first four innings alone, the Cowgirls had the W in the bag. The only two points Southeast Missouri scored all game came by way of a Marisa Sanders two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Next up on the list for the Cowgirls was Purdue-Fort Wayne.
After four scoreless innings of play the Cowgirls exploded for six runs in the fifth on three hits and three PDW errors. Holly Lawrence started the inning off with a triple to right field and was driven home soon after thanks to a sacrifice fly from Kober.
The last run of the game was scored in the sixth inning on a Molly Guidry's first homerun of the season.
For their fourth consecutive win in the tournament the Cowgirls blanked Appalachian State 1-0. The win clinched the tournament championship for McNeese.
In their last of five games the Cowgirls were defeated by tournament hostesses Memphis 2-1.
After returning home from Tennessee the cowgirls traveled to Monroe to face the Warhawks of ULM. A game in which they won 7-6 in extra innings.
Over the weekend the Cowgirls hosted the annual Cowgirl Classic tournament and are hosting a three game home series against the Lady Demons of Northwestern State this week.
